Prabir datta’s interest in Dance and Music began at an early age. His inmate talent and flair found full expression under the guidance of several eminent Gurus. He began learning Dance from Late Shri Achyuta Narayan, disciple of Late Shri Uday Shankar. He has also studied “Kathakali” for three years from Guru Govindan Kutti and “Manipuri” from Guru Nadia Singh in Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. The “Chhau” Dance was taught to him by Guru Krishna Chandra Naik of  Mayurvanj (Orissa).

This background led him to join Uday Shankar School of Dance (Kolkata), Little Ballet Troupe (Gwalior),Shri Ram Bhartiya Kala Kendra (Delhi) and Kuchipudi Dance Centre (Delhi) as a staff Artist. He has also danced in the productions of many leading Choreographers of India. However, he finaly dedicated himself completely to the study of “Kuchipudi” style under Padmabhushan Guru Smt. Swapnasundari, and is one of the most sincere and devoted male exponents of this style amongst this generation.

Last 29 years Prabir is working with Ms.Swapnasundari and her troupe “Kuchipudi Dance Centre” Delhi, as a Performer, Instructor, and Choreographer. He has choreographed Ballet “Ritusamharam” of  Kalidas  for  Kuchipudi  Dance  Centre, which was staged in “Kalidas Samaroha” at Ujjain. He has also Choreographed a Ballet “Sahas Ka Darpan” for ITC.group which staged in different parts of India. Prabir’s Choreography proposal “Ekta” based on Nehruji’s “Discovery of India has been selected for All India Choreography Festival, organised by Nehru Centre, Bombay to celebrate 50 years of Independence.


He has taken part in various prestigious festivals such as “Ganga Mahotsav” in Badrinath, Varanasi and Haridwar. “Khajuraho Dance Festival”(several times), “Kuchipudi Mahotsav” in Kolkata and Bombay, “ Konark Festival” in Odissa, “Nisha–Gandhi Festival” in Kerala, “Yakshagana Festival” in Kuchipudi Village, “Taj Mahotsav”in Agra etc.

In 1988, during the Festival of India Prabir accompanied Ms.Swapnasundari to the U.S.S.R (Sponsored by I.C.C.R, Ministry of External Affairs), In 2003 he went for a two-month tour of the U.S.A and Canada (Sponsored by I.C.C.R) He also toured Dubai, Sharjah, Kuwait etc. Most recently he went to Greece (2006) for Kuchipudi performances in 12th International Music & Dance Festival.

He is a recipient of Junior Fellowship for two years from Dept.of Culture, Govt. of India for a Research Project “Male contribution in Devdasi tradition of Andhra Pradesh” (1996—1998). He has also been awarded a Senior Fellowship from same Department for another Research Project “14th Century Bengali poet Chandidas and Kuchipudi Dance” for two years (2000--2002). Prabir is the member of CCRT (Ministry of Culture) Scholarship Committee and also a member of review committee of National Institute of Open School ( Minstry of Human Resource).

Prabir presently Heading the Music and Dance Faculty of Delhi Public School, Noida for last 27 years and also running a Cultural organization called NAVA – PALLAVA. He is also works as a Senior Dance Instructor and Troupe-In-Charge in Kuchipudi Dance Centre, Delhi, of which Padma Bhushan Ms.Swapnasundari is the Artistic Director.




NAVA – PALLAVA

This cultural organization dedicated to promote Indian Music and dance, took birth on 30th April’ 2004, with its first performance at LTG Auditorium, Mandi House, New Delhi.

It is a brain child of Prabir Datta, who is working in this field for last 35 years. The name Nava – Pallava was blessed by his Guru Padmabhushan Smt. Swapnasundari, who is the Chief Advisor to this organization.

Though Nava – Pallava is only 7 years old our senior artists and students have performed on several occasions including a performance in Ashoka Convention hall for the President of China and the delegation, a Lecture demonstration at India habitat Centre, Delhi for Deans and Directors from several MBA Institutes of India and abroad. Our artists also performed for International Youth delegation Delhi, Banaras Hindu University etc. Recently our troupe performed at Ganga Mahotsava, Rishikesh and Garhwal University, Uttarakhand.
